What is space?
According to the Cambridge Dictionary, "space" is an empty area that is available to be used.
That definition, in my opinion, represents what, when generally speaking, space is: something that is available or designated to be used. For me, space is no other than a collection of objects and things that we (the user) are able to inhabit; to use, give meaning to, and eventually turn into a “place.”
A living space becomes a place you call home.
A leisure space becomes your go-to place of gathering.
A retail space becomes the place where your new venture started.
Space, by itself, is an opportunity, a blank canvas waiting to be used. What is space, other than what we make out of it?
When we inhabit a space and make it our own, we pour a part of ourselves into shaping that space, and a bit of ourselves becomes part of that new place. It is a complex relationship that goes beyond aesthetics or materiality; it is, rather, a synthesis of our unique identity and ways of being.
As a spatial artist, I focus on those complex relationships between the objects, spaces, and places that they compose and represent our identity. I look at those unique collections of objects, people, and stories that are constantly composing, shaping, and redefining the places in which we live. Space, by itself, is just a physical representation, an open possibility, of something that can become a part of our identity. Thus, space is only limited by the interpretation and imagination of the user who experiences it, which is then translated into an unique spatial experience.
I want to understand you and help you achieve that unique spatial experience you are aiming for.
In the end, what is space… other than what you decide to make out of it?
